Marbella has been awarded second place as ‘Best European Destination 2022’ by the prestigious travel website European Best Destinations in association with Eden Network, created by the European Commission. The city has managed to climb the podium of this distinction, only behind Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and ahead of other major cities such as London, Athens and Rome, which were also among the 20 competing cities. In addition, the city has achieved recognition as the most exclusive and prestigious.
The Mayoress, Ángeles Muñoz, emphasised that «we have achieved a magnificent result which demonstrates the strength of our brand and our quality offer«. The councillor underlined «the enormous promotional impact that this distinction will have«, valued at more than two million euros throughout the year, and stressed that Marbella «has been the number one destination and the most voted by travellers from the United Kingdom, even ahead of London, one of our main source markets«.
For the political responsible, it is «another tourist attraction at a crucial time for the sector after the two years of pandemic» and took the opportunity to congratulate the team of the delegation of Tourism «for the great work they have done to achieve this award for the city» and thanked the people who have given the town a total of 61,401 votes for their support.
The Consistory made a decisive bid for this distinction with the tendering of a service contract to obtain the certification for Marbella as the best European Destination for the year 2022 by the Eden Network (European Destinations of Excellence) to promote the Marbella Tourism Image for almost 25,000 euros. Thanks to this, a campaign was launched which has culminated in the second place. The growth in media coverage of the award-winning destinations has averaged over 81 percent and it is estimated that the promotion will reach more than 420 million travellers.
In this regard, Muñoz explained that, according to reports from previous editions, «some of the candidates that competed in the final phase achieved tourism growth of up to 41 percent and that, in the case of locations such as Dinant (Belgium), the economic impact was more than 15 million euros«. An impact achieved thanks to the fact that in the second phase, after being selected from among 400 candidates, the city has been covered by the European Best Destinations platform, as well as by associated media such as Forbes USA, Condé Nast Travelers, Geo, National Geographic, Yahoo or Corriere Viaggi, among others.
